Rock Rail was established in 2014 to focus on the development of innovative, value enhancing funding approaches for strategically important UK passenger rolling stock and other rail infrastructure. Rock Rail is continuing to transform the rolling stock market and has secured £2 billion of new rolling stock fleets since 2016 from Siemens, Stadler and Bombardier for use by GTR, Abellio and First MTR on Moorgate, Greater Anglia and South Western rail franchise services respectively.
Rock Rail’s game changing approach to rolling stock funding has:
Enabled long term institutional investors to invest directly into a new sector.
Driven better value for government, operators and passengers.
Extended the market for infrastructure finance.
Rock Rail works closely with the franchise train operators and manufactures to ensure a collaborative approach to design, manufacture and acceptance of the new state of the art trains on time and to budget as well as to manage the long-term residual value and releasing risks.
Rock Rail is continuing to build on its successful rolling stock financing and procurement model and is pursuing other core fleet renewal opportunities, including rolling stock for the South East and East Midlands rail franchises and opportunities for the East–West Link.
In addition to rolling stock, Rock is also developing innovative funding models to drive enhanced value in other areas of rail infrastructure including digital signalling and depot construction and maintenance.
February 2016 financial close was reached with GTR for supply of new Siemens trains on the Great Northern route.
October 2016 financial close was reached with Abellio Great Anglia for the supply of new rolling stock for the Regional and Inter-City fleets.
June 2017 financial close was reached with South Western Railway for supply of new core rolling stock fleets on Windsor, Reading and West London suburban routes serving Waterloo station.
